Tallie touched Bernie's signature with her finger as tears filled her eyes. Even with his confession in front of her, she couldn't believe he would kill someone. He didn't shoot anyone in all his years as a police officer. In fact, others in the departments where Bernie had served expressed amazement at the predicaments Bernie could talk his way out of without firing his gun. 

And there was the age difference between Thomas and Johnny that Jenny had mentioned. She was right. If the two boys were full brothers, their mother couldn't have died when Bernie thought she did.
