THE YEARS WITH BERNIE

**Halo, Oregon
Twenty-eight years ago

After years of miscarriages, Tallie O'Shea was gloriously, heavily pregnant.

She smiled and grunted as she pushed herself up to lean against the nest of soft pillows on the bed. Even the awkwardness of eight months of pregnancy distending her belly brought joy.

Tallie closed her eyes for a moment to catch her breath. She placed her hands over her swollen abdomen to revel in the

NEWSPAPER OF THE FICTIONAL TOWN OF HALO, OREGON

Those of you who regard Tallie O'Shea as close to a saint may be surprised at revelations of dark secrets in her past in the upcoming story of her life, CHALLENGING THE LEGACY.

We already know she kept the secret of her daughter, Marly's, birth for nearly three decades. With the arrival of both Marly's biological parents in Halo, more of Tallie's past is coming to light.

"Not many people know I endured years in an abusive marriage before I met Bernie," Tallie said. Find out how she escaped that abuse to become the respected wife of a heroic policeman and mother to eight adopted kids in CHALLENGING THE LEGACY.

TWINS...

Grady's fraternal--not identical--twin is CJ, an attorney who moved out of Halo and pursues social causes with zeal.

Growing up, CJ followed his own vision of becoming an attorney who sought justice in the courtroom. At the same time, Grady came to idolize Collin, his oldest brother, who became a policeman like their father.

With no clear direction of his own, Grady followed in the long blue shadow of his father and oldest brother, becoming a cop who found a niche on the bomb squad.

As years pass, Grady finds a cop's uniform doesn't fit so well, and looks for other options that can use his skills as he travels his own road to bring justice.

DINNER AT TALLIE'S

Tallie is the glue that holds the O'Shea family together. Even before Bernie died, Tallie qualified for Mother of the Year every day. Though her eight adopted children are adults, they still return to the traditional Sunday dinner at Tallie's whenever they can. To reconnect with each other, to share events in their lives, and to enjoy Tallie's home cooking.

Coming November 2012, Tallie will have her own story in CHALLENGING THE LEGACY. Be prepared for some surprises as secrets from her past are revealed.

Welcome to Tallie O'Shea's!

A LIVING MEMORIAL FOR BERNIE

** "You're all amazing," Claudia said quietly. "You come from such different backgrounds and love each other so much."

"Thanks to Tallie and Bernie."

"Yeah." "You got that right." All the siblings murmured words of agreement, including Grady.
Tallie blushed. "Bernie did all the hard work. I was just a mom."

"Tallie, you were always more than a mom,"

MEET: VALEN, PHOTOGRAPHER AND FRIEND

Layla's photographer and friend has accompanied her on many assignments for The Messenger newspaper, including her return to Halo, the hometown she had fled in shame so many years ago...

"I've got to have those boots." Layla Dalton swung into a parking space in front of the two-story brick building that housed a bootery. This entire Eastern Oregon town felt like stepping back into an earlier era, complete with a horse-

Q. What was the name of the bomb-detecting robot in CHASING THE LEGACY?

A. The answer is in this excerpt:

While Grady stayed in relative safety, Bomber the robot maneuvered over the deeply gouged holes in what used to be downtown Halo and searched through the debris for explosives that might be lying dormant until some unsuspecting sucker stubbed his toe on them.

EDITORIAL: O'SHEA FOR SHERIFF

THE NEWSPAPER OF THE FICTIONAL TOWN OF HALO

Politics or police work? Over the last few months, incumbent sheriff Reid Weston has stumbled in protecting the citizens of this county. From bungling the investigation of a ring selling prescription drugs, to the explosive destruction of an entire town, to questionable dealings with several well-respected women, Weston has shown selfish disregard for anything but his own political advancement.

It is therefore the opinion of the editorial staff of this paper to support Collin O'Shea for sheriff of this county. O'Shea played a major role in coordinating rescue operations when the town of Halo was destroyed by a madman's revenge. His interest and concern for local citizens has been evidenced by his personal involvement in community events, including playing a major role in developing a center that will bring families together in a safe, positive environment. O'Shea's stellar law enforcement history with the State Police will ensure cooperation with agencies beyond our region and will bring rapid response of emergency resources should the need arise.

LOCAL SON WOUNDED IN SHOOTING!

THE NEWSPAPER OF THE FICTIONAL TOWN OF HALO

The good deed of helping an old lady out of the street turned into a life-or-death situation for state trooper Collin O'Shea. O'Shea was shot while assisting an unidentified woman out of the street. The woman seemed confused and was stranded in the street when the traffic lights changed.

After being wounded, O'Shea gave chase, bringing down the would-be assassin a few blocks away.

The woman was unhurt, and sent to the psychiatric hospital for evaluation. The entire situation is under investigation.

The O'Sheas are long-time citizens of Halo, and well respected for their community involvement.

A HAPPY ENDING FOR SOLSTICE

Anyone who has been around me quickly discovers I love dogs, and pets of some kind usually find their way into the pages of my books. In CHASING THE LEGACY, a stray dog adopts the heroine, and Layla names her Solstice.

**"Grrrrr."

A gutteral growl drew Layla's attention. She turned, meeting the eyes of a tattered brown dog slunk low to the ground and watching her warily.
