"Would you like to help with our friend, Mystique?" Rena opened the stall door and spoke softly to the horse. As Shiloh stepped into the stall, she saw the extent of the horse's injuries. Fresh pink scarring covered much of her front legs and chest, and only tufts of a mane stood in patches on the back of her neck.
Remembering how soothing Rena's touch was to her skin, Shiloh simply said, "How can I help?"
…Shiloh stared at the petite woman, wondering if she dared speak the words nearly bursting out of her mouth. She had always felt something was missing in the way Western medicine was practiced. Now she realized it was a connection with spirit. "Can you teach me?"
"I can teach you about herbs," Rena said. "And there are ways you can use energy to help a person heal if that is what they choose. It is not as powerful as a shaman who has the gift of healing, but it can indeed be miraculous."
Shiloh smiled as excitement stirred in her belly. She knew this training would make her a better doctor who could help so many more people. The desire to resume her practice once again lifted her heart.
"Mystique will be our teacher," Rena said.
