WILL YOU MARRY ME?

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

Shiloh lit the candles with trembling hands. Not because she feared fire any longer, but because she had never asked a man to marry her before.

Those at the farm had disappeared in honor of Jeremiah coming to dinner tonight...

"Hello? Where is everyone?" Jeremiah's voice echoed through the farmhouse.

Shiloh swallowed and smoothed nonexistent wrinkles out of her suede skirt. "On the back porch."

Jer emerged from the house and looked around. "Where is everyone else?"

With a shrug, Shiloh tried to keep her voice nonchalant. "Had other things to do."

She bit her lower lip as Jer surveyed the small round table set for two and the glow of the candles…"Special occasion tonight?"

FINDING COURAGE

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

"The barn is on fire!" Shiloh's horrified cry alerted others at the farm. While one person called 911, others started the pump that ran the irrigation system to start spraying water on the fire and opened the barn doors to let the animals out.
Shiloh stared at the flames, terror swelling up in her chest and choking off her breath.

Orange tongues of fire roared toward her like the angry bellow of a giant beast intent on swallowing her whole--
No! Shiloh shoved away the memories that kept her frozen in place. I have to help!

She forced her feet to move. Forced herself in the direction of the flames. With shaking hands, she joined those accounting for the animals who had charged out of the barn.

"Where's Mystique?" Shiloh shouted to be heard over the roar of the fire and other noises. Her dappled grey horse wasn't among the animals clustered in a nearby pasture.

"She must still be in the barn." Phoenix stared at the structure rapidly being engulfed in flames. "She's terrified of fire."

Without thinking, Shiloh stripped off her sweater and doused it in one of the water troughs.

"What are you doing?" Phoenix grabbed at her arm.

"Finding my courage." Shiloh slipped out of Phoenix's grasp as she flung the soaking sweater over her head and ran for the barn.

"Leave her. She'll never get out." Shiloh pushed away the memories of the arsonists' voices in her head and whispered, "I'm coming, Mystique. Don't lose faith, baby."

Keeping a vision of the little mare firmly in her mind, Shiloh crouched low to stay under the worst of the smoke and moved as fast as she could toward Mystique's stall.

The stall door stood open, but Mystique huddled in the back corner, too terrified to find her way to freedom.

"It's time to go to outside."

The little mare jerked at the sound of Shiloh's voice and reared back, the whites of her eyes reflecting a terror Shiloh knew so well. Use the energy. Call on your guides and angels to focus.

"Come on, baby. You saved me, now it's my turn." Shiloh held out her hand and Mystique timidly stretched her neck to sniff.

"Let's take a walk, sweet girl." In slow motion, Shiloh stretched the sweater over the horse's head and grasped her halter. Mystique jerked again, but Shiloh held on. "Just a walk, baby. Just a walk."

She took a step forward and the little mare followed.

As they emerged from the stall, flames seemed to surround them. The closest exit was the side door into the llama's pasture. Shiloh hesitated only a split second. "He'll just have to tolerate me this time. Come on, girl."

Once Mystique started moving, she stepped quickly toward the exit, with Shiloh's arm looped over her neck.

They emerged into the twilight, and were immediately soaked by water from the irrigation hose, manned by Richard "Bigsy" Dalton and Jane.

They were safe!

As tears and creek water streamed down her face, Shiloh laughed and tossed the sweater off her head. She gave Mystique a kiss and let go, allowing the mare to trot to the far end of the pasture.

AN EXPLOSIVE REMEMBERING

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

The official wedding of Deputy Dawson Browning and Marly O'Shea was planned to be the highlight of a celebration unveiling the first phase of the new buildings in Halo on October 31.

That day dawned clear and crisp. The thermometer had dipped below freezing the night before, so a shimmer of sparkling white-jeweled frost covered everything in Halo.

At noon, Shiloh joined the other women of Marly's wedding party at the O'Shea family house for a light lunch and to pamper the bride before dressing for the ceremony. The groom and his party drove to Bill and Audrey's ranch to entertain themselves with strict orders not to make any bruises that would show.

Several hours later, the wedding parties met on the outskirts of town to start the procession to the ceremony itself. The women moved from cars to horse-drawn carriages, while the men unloaded horses from trailers to ride into town.

The bride was being assisted into her private carriage when an explosion rocked the nearest horse trailer.

The wedding party froze for a moment, then weapons appeared from boots and holsters tucked under jackets as the O'Shea brothers leaped into action, calmed the frightened horses, then rode full gallop to encircle the area where the blast occurred. The rest of the men hustled the women and children into vans--maybe the least dangerous place to be when little offered safety from explosions.

…The pandemonium faded into a sepia-toned movie playing without sound in the background of Shiloh's mind as she stared at the smoke billowing toward the sky a short distance away.

…Swept up in the arms of her fireman angel once again, Jeremiah slid into the vehicle with Shiloh on his lap and slammed the door shut as Collin shoved the vehicle into gear and punched the gas.

Shiloh clung to Jeremiah, memories from the day her clinic burned as clear in her mind as the mountain air surrounding Halo.

TEACHING MYSTIQUE

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

"Would you like to help with our friend, Mystique?" Rena opened the stall door and spoke softly to the horse. As Shiloh stepped into the stall, she saw the extent of the horse's injuries. Fresh pink scarring covered much of her front legs and chest, and only tufts of a mane stood in patches on the back of her neck.

Remembering how soothing Rena's touch was to her skin, Shiloh simply said, "How can I help?"

…Shiloh stared at the petite woman, wondering if she dared speak the words nearly bursting out of her mouth. She had always felt something was missing in the way Western medicine was practiced. Now she realized it was a connection with spirit. "Can you teach me?"

"I can teach you about herbs," Rena said. "And there are ways you can use energy to help a person heal if that is what they choose. It is not as powerful as a shaman who has the gift of healing, but it can indeed be miraculous."

Shiloh smiled as excitement stirred in her belly. She knew this training would make her a better doctor who could help so many more people. The desire to resume her practice once again lifted her heart.

"Mystique will be our teacher," Rena said.

I WANT MY COURAGE BACK!

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

Most of her recent memories were gone and now Shiloh was questioning her purpose in life. Worse than that, her fearlessness at facing challenges was left in ashes. More often than not, she simply wanted to curl into her angel fireman's arms and feel safe. Not just because she was attracted to Jeremiah--though she definitely was--but because she was afraid.

She looked for the llamas' pasture and took a wide detour away from the creature who spit at strangers. Then on the way past the chickens pecking at bugs in the dust of the Farmyard, a squawking ruckus arose that startled Shiloh backward several steps.

The worst, though, was her fear of fire. A farrier had come to shoe some of the horses and worked at a small forge smoking hot from the coals needed to soften the iron shoes enough to shape them to fit each horse. As flames occasionally shot upward, Shiloh froze.

Orange tongues of fire roared toward her like the angry bellow of a giant beast intent on swallowing her whole...

WHAT NOW?

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

When the jet landed in Oregon, the reality of Shiloh's challenges returned once again. She was homeless, without a business to support herself, and only had vague images of what had happened over the past two months.

…The drive to Phoenix's farm passed mostly in silence, with both Shiloh and Jeremiah lost in their own thoughts.
Phoenix seemed delighted Shiloh would be staying at the farm, saying the abused women who came to the farm were often afraid to go to a doctor or hospital.

…"Here we are." Jeremiah pulled his classic red pickup to a stop in front of the farmhouse. A three-story stone structure with a nearby pond and a traditional red barn behind it.

Shiloh drew a deep breath. A new adventure was about to begin.

A PAST FULL OF MYSTERIES

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

Jeremiah felt immediately at home when he walked into the Boston Fire Department. The echo of his boot heels on the concrete floor. The clang of lockers as firefighters pulled out their gear to respond to the call-out crackling over the radio. The gleaming red and chrome of the fire engines with their deep-rumbling diesel engines.

As the engine pulled out into the street, sirens blaring, a relative quiet settled over the firehouse.

His grandfather had served here, and great-grandfather before him. A tradition in the Winston family. Until his first adoptive father broke tradition and became--well, Jeremiah wasn't sure exactly what Skeet Winston did for a career. They moved a lot and told Jer not to talk to cops. Ironically, he ended up in a family of blue uniforms.

As an adult looking back, so much of his years with the Winstons didn't make sense. Maybe that was the reason he couldn't let go. Too many unanswered questions. The biggest one was why did they dump him at a child welfare office? Didn't wealthy people have other options, such as boarding schools or nannies or other relatives who would have taken Jeremiah if they were tired of being parents?

HER FIREMAN ANGEL

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

"Your sister's birth father was very generous to fly us to Boston." Shiloh sat beside Jeremiah on Pierce Stratford's private jet. "Are you sure you don't mind going with me?"

"I've been thinking of going to Boston for quite some time." The clamor of memories immediately started in Jeremiah's head. He rarely allowed a thought for his former adoptive parents. Not after Bernie took him home to live with Tallie and the other boys--and one girl--they had adopted. Living in a small, rural town might not have been Jeremiah's preference. However, his new family seemed to love him and the townspeople were kind, so he pushed aside his silent fear they too would reject him and adapted to rural living as best he could.

Once again, Jeremiah pushed aside the memories and focused on Shiloh. "Boston has one of the best fire departments in the nation. Seeing how they operate will benefit our department."

"Is that the only reason you wanted to come with me?"

The hint of disappointment in Shiloh's voice made Jer smile. "Traveling is a great way to get to know someone better."

A slow smile formed on Shiloh's face. "Do you want to know me better, Jer?"

"Yeah. I do." Their gazes connected and held.

WHO CAN SHE TRUST?

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

The doctors had signed Shiloh's release papers, so now she sat waiting for a wheelchair to take her out to Jeremiah's vehicle. Then they would fly to Boston for Dr. Bruce to perform surgery on her hands.

"Are you ready to go?" The nurse named Eula who had worked at Shiloh's clinic before the fire bustled into the room with a wheelchair.

Anxiety and excitement stirred in Shiloh's belly. A new chapter in her life was unfolding. This time without her usual fearlessness. And without her memory. "I guess I have to be."

"I have a hypo to relax you." Eula grasped Shiloh's arm and swabbed the inside bend of her elbow.

"No thanks, I'll be fine."

"I've already marked it on your chart."

Shiloh frowned and tugged on her arm. "There was no injection noted when the doctor signed the release papers."

"Must have been an oversight." Eula held onto Shiloh's arm, positioning the needle.

I DON'T REMEMBER...

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

"Do you remember anything?" Layla asked.

"Broken pieces," Shiloh whispered. She paused, trying to gather thoughts that hovered at the edges of her awareness, evaporating like mist when she tried to grasp them. "Vague figures in flames. Carrying--I don't know--something. And evil laughter. Then comfort. Like being in the arms of an angel."

Shiloh closed her eyes again, drifting in the vague mists, then heard the woman's voice again. Soothing. Comforting.

WHO'S THE ENEMY?

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

Andy sweated under his fireman's turnouts. The fire at the doctor's clinic had been contained and he was secretly glad Jeremiah O'Shea had rescued the lady doctor from the flames. He hadn't wanted to leave her in the fire, but the Boss didn't give him a choice.

***
The group in the room started murmuring and moving closer to Jeremiah and Weston, who were now circling each other. Suddenly, the fire tones blasted through the tension, scattering those on duty. Jer at least had the satisfaction of shoving Weston aside with his elbow as he hustled to don his turnouts.

The crew was halfway to the address when the message came through it was a false alarm. When they returned to the fire station and were stowing their gear in the lockers, one of the other firefighters commented to Jeremiah, "Hey, hero. You might want to watch your back."

As the other man walk away, Jer slipped off his turnout coat, automatically fingering the badge that had belonged to his great-grandfather. Friendly advice or warning?

…For now, he mentally filed away Ace's words. Sometimes having cops as brothers stirred up suspicions he really didn't want in his life.

THE RESCUE

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

Grateful the other firefighters brought his turnouts and air tank when they arrived on the scene, Jeremiah was now equipped to help more people. As he carried another victim to the medic area, he expected to see Shiloh directing medical care.

"Where's the doc?" Jeremiah shouted to be heard amid the sirens and smoke and chaos.

Rochelle Wymer, one of the local emergency medical techs, glanced up from bandaging a gash on an older woman's arm. "She went to the clinic for more supplies."

"How long has she been gone?"

"Damn, Jer, I didn't set the timer on my watch when she left."

Jeremiah usually appreciated Rochelle's in-your-face approach that kept the EMTs and firefighters moving when sheer determination was all they had left. But today, worry for the lady doctor nagged at his gut.

He looked across Celestial Creek toward the doctor's clinic, hoping to see a slender figure moving this direction.
What he saw instead was smoke billowing out an upper window. The building wasn't part of those destroyed in the explosions on this side of the creek, yet it certainly seemed to be on fire.

Jeremiah started walking rapidly toward the building, then broke into a run, as he shouted into the radio wired to his helmet. "Fire at the doctor's clinic!"

A muffled curse answered him, followed by a pause, and the order to one of the engines to hit the other side of town. Jeremiah pounded across the bridge at a run, focused on Shiloh's clinic.

The redirected engine arrived at the same time Jeremiah did. Flames shimmered menacingly through the glass doors in the front of the building, so Jeremiah trotted around to the side. Usually unlocked during business hours, the side door seemed jammed shut. Using a crowbar, he pried it open. While his partner directed a hose line on the flames, Jeremiah dropped low and scanned under the smoke for any sign of the doctor.

He found Shiloh by the window, unconscious. A knot swelled at the back of her head, and her skin was red from the heat, but she was breathing.

THE CRISIS

LEGACY UNDER FIRE
Book #6 of the
Halo Legacy Series

As Shiloh opened the door to the refrigerator in the staff room, a series of loud booms rattled the windows and the ground shook beneath her feet. Her gaze jerked around the room, seeking the cause of the noise and the rumbling underfoot. Through the window, she saw smoke billowing across the creek in the main part of town.

Explosions? People could be hurt!

She shoved the refrigerator door closed and grabbed a medical bag, cramming in as many supplies as possible. Then she ran across the bridge that separated her medical clinic from most of the town and into the chaos and debris that used to be the sleepy little town of Halo.

THE MYSTERY...

Female. Caucasian. Pregnant.

Unusual. A frown drifted across Dr. Shiloh Bergamot's brow as she read through the medical records. A town of seventy-five people wouldn't normally have so many pregnant women. Yet the old medical records left from the previous doctor in Halo, Oregon included cryptic accounts of at least three dozen women in the past decade who had delivered full-term babies.

In her almost two-year stint here, she had only seen a couple pregnant women. Yet in the past ten years the former doctor treated thirty-some women--over three times as many pregnancies as Shiloh had seen.

If all those women and their babies stayed in Halo, almost half its population would be under ten years old. Yet most of the town's citizens were aged fifty or older.

Where were these mothers and their children?
