Bernie didn't set out to be a hero, but he suspected the citizens of Halo were looking for one. He shifted his shoulders, as uncomfortable as if a red cape fluttered around his neck. He glanced toward Tallie and caught her eye, then smiled. If she could take a chance on building a future with an Irish rogue she barely knew, he could certainly pay back the people who had tolerated his selfish and wild ways during his childhood and teen years.

Bernie pulled to a stop in front of the tavern and cut the engine. He sat for a moment as doubts swirled through his mind. Bernie wondered if his grandfather had come to call or just sent the attorney. Part of him wanted to see his grandparents, but he was also ashamed to face them with what had happened.
